When security robots go rogue and interrupt a late night couples party at the mall…well…you have Chopping Mall. For some unexplained reason, a test group of robots malfunctions and kills the late-night mall employees. A group of four couples holding a small party in one of the stores then become the targets. After the mall locks down for security, they are trapped to face the psycho bots.
The security bots start their revolt by silently taking out the guards. Afterwards they move to electrocuting a janitor. When they get to the teenagers, they completely open fire with laser guns (where did these even come from?) and the film turns to an all out action movie. Though I admit it’s entertaining, it’s not the style of 80’s horror that I prefer.
Overall, Chopping Mall is a ridiculous film. The action is fun, and the absolute absurdity makes for an entertaining watch. But it is not a film that I will re-watch. Then again sci-fi infused horror is never my first choice in sub-genres. In fact, if I were to name the most lame concept for a horror film, it would probably be killer robots…so my opinion of this movie is swayed by that. That being said, even with my bias towards the plot, it was an entertaining watch. So if killer robots are your thing, you’ll probably love this movie.
